Why David's Clinic Switched to Fusion's Pediatric EMR

Why Stepping Stone Switched from ClinicSource to Fusion

David and Miranda Ainsworth opened Stepping Stone Pediatric Therapy in June 2008 to cater to children with special needs. The clinic offers occupational, physical, and speech therapy. By 2016, they had grown to 14 full-time therapists, one admin, and over 300 active patients.  



David says they started with “the old faithful paper documentation system” but as they grew this became impractical, so they began moving from software to software looking for an efficient documentation and billing solution.

They tried WebPT, but it didn’t work for their Speech department. Then they switched to ClinicSource, but after two years there they found it slow and difficult to use.

According to David, ClinicSource “didn’t have a good flow to it.” Therapists were having trouble keeping up with documentation, and--as if that wasn't bad enough--the server would go out often and therapists would lose their work (if they were able to log in at all).

David knew they needed to make a change, so they started looking for a new option that would meet their needs.

A large percentage of Stepping Stone’s clients were insured by Medicaid. With ClinicSource, billing Medicaid was taking up a lot of time because he was forced to bill one claim at a time through Medicaid’s web portal.

So finding software that could bill Medicaid directly was a big priority in their search.

Finding a documentation system that worked well with all therapy disciplines (OT, PT and ST) was the most challenging aspect when searching for an EMR/EHR system.

After doing numerous demos with companies that didn’t “check all the boxes,” another practice recommended Fusion. After a demo, David and Miranda found that the Fusion workflow “just made sense” and it was clear that documenting and billing would become much easier after switching.


Stepping Stone therapists have found the biggest benefit to be the pediatric-focused documentation. Their OTs, PTs, and SLPs, all find the system easy to use.

And David calls Fusion’s integrated billing the “icing on the cake”. Automatic claim generation, electronic remittance automation, centralized payer management, and (most of all) the ability to bill Alabama Medicaid have made life much easier for their billing department.
